Language at 64!!!

This is Claudia and Helen doing language. Helen is trying to teach Claudia Swahili. Now, everybody says it's the easy language in the world. That's everybody who has never learned Swahili.

As for me, I got to get a block of time to commit. I'm off to Dar es Salaam on the 6th of April to represent our Strategy Associate at a meeting there. Please pray that all will go well.

Taxes are Done!!!

While I was in Uganda having a great time with friends in Kampala and Jinja, Claudia was pulling together our 2008 tax information. She's just w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l !!!!

Uganda Baptist Seminary

These are some of the most committed students and faculty I have ever had the privilege of being with. They are committed to studying, teaching, and preaching the Word of God. These students lead thousands to the Lord, baptize and plant churches all across Uganda. It was my joy to share with them.

The Nile

As part of our Team Building exercise, the group rafted the Nile. After the first time, I promised the Lord I would never do it again...but peer pressure! I'm so glad I did. This time it was so much better. Lots of fun!

Website Up and Going

After several hours we have our website up and going. Check it out www.hoodsineastafrica.blogspot.com.

Our Precious Grandchildren

Our New Assignment

13 Countries in Equatorial Africa needing to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 7 of these countries have no IMB missionaries. Is God calling you? There is no better time that NOW!

Kenya Update

February/March, 2009 - Nairobi, Kenya

Well, we have been in Nairobi in our house during February and think we will be here for awhile. We had 3 great weeks of strategy training during January at Brackenhurst, our conference center about 25 miles outside Nairobi, and four couples from Uganda attended this training and it was wonderful to be with them. We are getting a few pieces of furniture bought and pictures of our family (lots of grand babies) on the walls and to our surprise, we found a very good mattress. So we are feeling more at home and enjoying getting into the work here. We live on the compound grounds of our guesthouse, Hampton House, and that has afforded us the privilege to see many of our missionaries coming in and out from several countries for various reasons. I have given away lots of pound cake, brownies, cookies and fruit salad and had many in our home to eat. I am grateful that I have found my way around a large section of Nairobi and can help transport them to various places such as doctor, hospital, shopping and etc.

Danny continues to assist our Cluster Strategy Leader, Tim Tidenberg, as they pray, plot and seek how to implement strategy to reach into 13 countries in the Equatorial Cluster. PRAY for them and other leaders who are now being chosen to direct the work in the countries of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, DRC-Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Part of Chad, Central African Republic, Burundi, Gabon and Southern Sudan We had to look on the map to even know where some of these are located. This is a very large region and we are in need of many more personnel to win people to Christ. In some of these countries, we have NO MISSIONARY PRESENCE. Please PRAY as strategy and plans are mapped out to be able to move into new areas and strengthen the work that is already established in other areas. PRAY for the International Mission Board also as it presently goes through monumental organizational changes to better shore up the mission endeavor around the world. Don’t forget there are over 5500 missionaries serving around the world. The task is huge but our God is calling and leading and is larger than this task.

Danny just returned from a week of Leadership Development with 17 missionary men and they concluded by rafting the Nile River in Uganda for a bonding experience. He had vowed it was so frightening the first time he did it that he would never do it again. BUT...you know he is competitive and could not sit on side lines while the others did it. And it turned out to be a much better experience due to the instruction of the guide and also the fun of being with a group he knew. He enjoyed the training and the rafting.

We continue to worship with a small Kenyan congregation about 10 miles out of the city, Rungiri Baptist Church. But at this point with Danny’s schedule we have not really been able to go out there except on Sundays. They are very desirous to learn more about the Bible, which challenges us, and we want to do some Discipleship Training with them. PRAY as we continue to seek time in our schedule to help them in this area. Also, PRAY for over 10.6 million Kenyans who are starving due to drought. PRAY for feeding projects being developed and for those who direct these huge efforts. PRAY against corrupt government and suppliers of grain in this process and PRAY FOR RAIN.

Last month we asked you to pray for the team from Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Alexandria, AL, returning for the 4th year to Kampala to work among the house churches in the slums. God blessed that work and new opportunities opened up in schools, orphanages, 3 prisons and slums; and new house churches were born. Over 600 received Christ. They worked alongside Manna Ministry who provides 50 pounds of rice, beans, posho and cooking oil to 100 very needy families. This bag of food will feed a family of 4 for a month. This is done for 6 months in the same area before moving to another needy area.

Below are excerpts shared by Douglas Aliro from a lady who was NOT a recipient of the food bag but lives in the slums in Biina Zone; which is situated in the heart of a very large Muslim community. Her thoughts about food being given to some of the most needy are humbling......
“Even that drunkard!!” she said, “that poor neglected lady is receiving food. That lady was really suffering. If you people can give a person who is so needy in her life, regardless of her background...my, my....She is a drunkard not by her choice but conditioned to do so by her suffering! You people have made me see and understand the heart of God! This for me is like mercy undeserved.... Hey, I did not received food but I received a Bible! At least I can get a little food from my humble business but a Bible in my own language is too expensive for me....These people who brought the food and Bibles have a very different heart. They have loved on us even if some of us are not worthy of any love to receive. Imagine a drunkard in need received her share of food by born agains.”

Go to the blog: http://imfcblog.us and read of the work there. We have always had house churches develop in the new areas where the food distribution program was started. PRAY for the house churches of Kampala and also for Manna Ministry as they continue to seek to feed very, very needy people and share Christ.

Our grand babies are growing and we are missing them and cherish each picture. Pray for our families and the bonding of our love though distance separates us. PRAY also for Danny’s mom, Margie, as she receives a pacemaker March 17.

Our love and prayers remain with you all who are so faithful to love, support and encourage us. We would not want to be here without God’s power and love and the wonderful under girding that you are in prayers and spirit. Please know of our perpetual love for you.

Kenya Update for February

February, 2008, Kampala, Uganda, Africa

The days seem to be melting away now as we have many tasks to complete before our departure by mid April. We leave for Johannesburg, South Africa, Feb. 24 for a meeting and Danny returns here on the 29th but I remain there to most probably have knee surgery. I have a torn meniscus and will be seeing a doctor March 3 and possible surgery. I might be there 3 weeks before surgery can be scheduled and then some recuperation and return. I have had a problem for 4 months, and not sure how it started, but this was unexpected so it has hastened our need to begin closing out the furnishings in our apt so that when I return we can have most of that behind us and can spend the latter days here visiting with our Uganda brothers and sisters. We do keep wondering where these 3 years have gone? We can hardly imagine leaving Uganda and the dear friends we have made here. WE will sorely miss them. It has been a busy and challenging ministry and one for which we are so grateful. We still are not completely sure about the next step in our journey but will continue on in the process with IMB to return to some job, perhaps still in Africa, if not Uganda. We are just open to where God leads us. WE are getting very anxious to see sweet Isaac, and of course our other family. He is growing quickly and beginning to crawl and has bottom teeth.

We went to Nairobi for a week of medical testing before some other training was to begin. We got good medical checkups overall and were so grateful that Danny’s prostate biopsy came back negative. We were to be in Nairobi for 3 weeks for Strategy Leader training but on the second day we were all advised that we must return to our countries because of the continuing conflicts in Kenya. There were riots, fighting and displacements very near the place where we were staying. Though we did not feel we were in any immediate danger, those in charge felt it was best to cancel the meeting and send us home. We do appreciate the care and concern that the IMB has for its people. We were disappointed to return but the leaders there also had much to deal with in their city. Things continue to be very critical in Kenya and they do need our continued prayers that peace may come. Please PRAY for the conflicts in Kenya and also for our many missionaries there.

We have had a wonderful team from Mount Zion Baptist Church, Alexandria, AL, working with us these past two weeks. They have been such a joy and have done a wonderful job. They were involved in some new work about 3 hours west of here, near Ft. Portal, and in their 3 days there, 150 folks gave their lives to Christ. Also, there were 3 new house churches born. PRAY for these new house groups. This is Mount Zion’s third year to come to Kampala and they have added so much to the ministry here and we appreciate them and their church for sending them. We have been so blessed with many wonderful volunteers who have come these past three years. They are such great helpers to reach out into the city and beyond and share Jesus with love and enthusiasm.

Manna Ministry, the food distribution program, started a new 6 month program in two areas this month and we are looking forward to seeing house churches born in these areas. We have been so blessed to be able to partner with them as they share food and we share the gospel at the distributions and see house churches and celebration points come to be. WE are blessed by Jimmy Barry and the men he represents who meet physical needs for about 400+ folks per month. Many folks are being saved through this program and that is their goal along with feeding hungry and dying people.

Thank you to so many who shared love and concern for Rose, our helper, whose house burned. She is doing well and is so grateful to God for the way that He has helped her and sustained her. She was so devastated with the loss but He has multiplied her blessings and she is doing well. And her faith has been a perpetual testimony of His grace and love.

In January, we welcomed Stephen (pronounced Stef-en) and Kaye Carson, Longview Point Baptist Church, Hernando, MS, to our team. And what can I say?????….Mississippians are just great folks!!!!! They are a young couple and had been to Uganda before as volunteers and felt God leading them to serve here at least 2 years. They are quickly becoming acclimated to the culture and are doing a great job loving the Ugandans. PRAY for Stephen and Kaye that they will adjust well and have the privilege to share Jesus with many people.

Thanks again for all your wonderful love and encouragement to us and we are looking forward to soon being able to see many of you when we return to the US. We will be hiding out some with Isaac so that his parents can’t find him but we will also be traveling some and look forward to crossing paths with many of you. We just are so grateful for the joy to have had you on this journey with us in prayer, love, financial support, love gifts, visits, emails and the list goes on. You are dear and precious to us.
